      When interest is calculated on the initial principal and on any interest earned that has not been paid or withdrawn, this is known as compound interest. This means that you earn interest not only on your original investment (the principal) but also on the interest that has been added to your investment over time. This process of earning interest on interest is called compounding.
      The compounding period is the frequency with which interest is calculated and added to the principal. It can vary and may be annually, semiannually, quarterly, monthly, daily, or even continuously.
      For example, if interest is compounded annually, interest is added to the principal once a year. If compounded monthly, interest is added 12 times a year.
