  1. Question 2 seems a little misleading. Am I wrong for thinking anything above the line are ADJUSTMENTS while anything below the line are DEDUCTIONS? As such, the answer is asking for a DEDUCTION which student interest is technically an ADJUSTMENT making the answer 0?

    1. Hello Seth,

      “Adjustments to income” (often called above-the-line deductions) are used to arrive at Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), while below-the-line deductions are either the standard deduction or itemized deductions that reduce taxable income after AGI.

      In this question, when it asks what amount “can be claimed as a deduction”, it’s referring to the allowable deduction under IRS rules, which includes above-the-line deductions like student loan interest.

      Thus, even though student loan interest is technically an adjustment to income, it is still considered a deduction, just one that comes above the line rather than below it. The IRS also refers to it this way in its publications and instructions (e.g., IRS Pub 970 and Form 1040 Schedule 1).

      Therefore, the $1,800 is a valid deduction, just not one that’s itemized or below the line.
