Understand the reasoning

A teaching pace that gives concepts room to make sense.

When a lecture, textbook, or online class leaves you with questions, revisit the topic with an explanation that builds from the basics.

Start with what the concept means.

Build the foundation before moving into calculations, rules, and journal entries.

Follow each step in an example.

See how the facts connect to the solution and why each step belongs there.

Try it yourself, then review.

Use exercises and questions to find what you understand and what needs another look.

A small example of the approach

Understand the transaction. Then write the entry.

Begin with what actually happened in the business. Identify the accounts, explain how they change, and connect those changes to the accounting equation.

That reasoning gives you something to apply when the next question uses different numbers or different wording.

ILLUSTRATIVE FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING EXAMPLE

A business buys equipment for $2,400 on account.

The equipment is received today. The supplier will be paid later. Which accounts change?

See the reasoning and journal entry

1. Identify what the business receives. Equipment is an asset, so assets increase by $2,400.

2. Identify how it is financed. The business owes the supplier. Accounts payable, a liability, increases by $2,400. Cash does not change.

3. Record both changes. Debit Equipment to increase the asset and credit Accounts Payable to increase the liability.

AccountDebitCredit
Equipment$2,400—
Accounts Payable—$2,400

Check the logic: Assets and liabilities each increase by $2,400. Equity is unchanged, so the accounting equation remains balanced.
